🔬 Strengthening HIV Diagnostics in Africa:
Call to Bold Action 🌍

Africa is at a critical juncture in its fight against HIV/AIDS. With 25.9 million people living with HIV and global donor support declining—especially from PEPFAR—urgent action is needed to avoid an additional 6.3 million AIDS-related deaths by 2029.

In April 2025, Africa Health Business (AHB) and Roche Diagnostics convened experts from across the continent to chart a path toward sustainable HIV diagnostics. The outcome? A clear mandate: Africa must transition from donor dependency to self-reliance through domestic financing, digital innovation, and public-private partnerships.

The report proposes a three-pillar strategy:

  1. Domestic Resource Mobilization – meeting the 15% Abuja Declaration target.
  2. Innovative Financing – leveraging solidarity levies, diaspora bonds, and monetized health data.
  3. Blended Finance & PPPs – unlocking private capital to modernize labs and expand local manufacturing.

Key recommendations include integrating diagnostics into UHC, investing in health workers, and digitizing systems for efficiency and transparency.

Africa has the tools. What’s needed now is bold leadership and collaborative implementation to ensure diagnostics are accessible, affordable, and sustainable—for all.
