Landscape Analysis on Patient Accessible EMRS/EHRS in East and West Africa
There has been a growing interest in electronic medical records (EMRs) or electronic health records (EHRs) in many countries. This is due to recognition that a stronger health information technology is crucial to achieving higher quality care at lower cost and improving patients care.
With the private sector accounting for a significant healthcare provision share, it has enabled the intensified introduction of new technologies into the healthcare industry. Aligned to this is the increased importance on patient-centered care and the need for transparency where a patient can have access to their medical data and consent on what, when and where they receive their treatment.
AHB undertook a study to better understand the East and West African markets with regards to EMRs and EHRs, specifically where patients have access to their own medical records.
The study provided an overview of the EMR/EHR markets in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, and Nigeria. Additionally, it offered insights into policy and regulation, highlighted EMR/EHR system suppliers, and identified the challenges, gaps, and opportunities in each respective country.
